Not Feeling Special

I feel pretty bad today. The family celebrated my birthday today, even though it's really on Tuesday. So there was a nice dinner and Daryl came home from MSU and my Aunt Lynn came from MSU too (med school).

And everyone talked about Daryl. She's a freshman this year, so everyone wanted to know how she was doing. It was my birthday.

But then I feel horrid for even thinking such a thing about my sister. It makes me feel even worse that I did when I didn't feel like I was anything special.

A good thing that happened today was that I designed and made (mostly) an LLBean-esque tote bag. It's a tannish color, not canvas, but a little lighter weight, with black handles. I ran out of black thread though, when I was attaching the handles (Seriously, how can we not have anymore black thread), so I can't finish it yet. The other thing about it is I am going to attache buttons and ribbon (in a tasteful manner, promise!) to make it less LLBean-ish.

So I'm feeling sorry and angry at myself whilst trying to write a paper..

it's almost my birthday! It's on Tuesday, but since that is in the middle of the week, we are going to celebrate it this weekend.

Daryl is coming home for dinner and stuff, and at the library we have this thing where who ever has the birthday before yours brings in the treat for your birthday. We believe in eating here at work. Keenan said he was bringing in ice cream cake on Saturday. That should be fun!

Breakdown of my weekend

So last weekend I went to the Wheatland Folk Festival! It was so much fun!

There were some really great groups, including Grada, a (real) Irish band. They were a lot of fun to listen to!

My absolute favorite band that was there were The Duhks. They are Canadian. Enough said, but I'll say more anyway. Not many people can pull off having a banjo in a band. Guass what? The Duhks are definitely cool enough. Someone, during the performance, had one of those novelty umbrellas that looked like a duck, and they danced around in the front. Absolutely hilarious!

They only thing that I didn't like was the weather. On Saturday is was really really cold and a little rainy. When you are staying up until 2 in the morning, cold is not good.

Also on Saturday (or, I suppose, Sunday morning), there was this hilarious MC. When the Duhks ended, and everyone was packing up to go back to the campsites, he played an old record with this hilarious song.

AND it has the best "get stuck in your head" tune! An absolutely perfect song.

I am officially the Queen of Wrong Rack shopping. You know, you pick something up off the sale rack, only to find out that it really wasn't on sale. Happens to me all the time.
I was looking for a dress, because my friend Susan told me the same dress that I looked at in Pontiac was at Younkers, only in black. I see it, hurrah, try it on, love the color, blah blah blah.

Its 150 bucks. Hmm.. I think, I really can't justify that, seeing as how this is definitely only 5-7hours of my life. Then I realize it was on the 80% off rack. Yeah, think how this story ends. It wasn't actually on that rack. Shit. I still lust after that dress. I want it. I'm thinking of paying for half and then asking my parents to give it to me as a birthday gift.

Hmm.. I really have nothing to write about, so I'll just ramble along in my usual, non concise fashion.

I can't believe there are only 5 days until school starts! It really hasn't sunk in yet, but I suppose when I have to wake up at 6:30 to catch the bus, it will all go into perspective! At least I don't have to be at school at 6:30 this year!

I can't wait to see some of my friends, either! I haven't seen Fiza all summer long! I didn't see anyone really at readmission, just a bunch of the Connor/Erin clique. That's rather awkward (did I spell that right, it looks wrong with 2 "w"s) because I like to think that I am still friends with many of the guys in that "clique", but I'm not really friends with the girls anymore. I don't think it is really worth it, because what is the point of pretending to be something you aren't? I learned that a lot this summer. I don't think it has really cemented itself in my brain though, since I still worry what people think of me. I know I shouldn't care, but who really doesn't? I'd love to be able to just be myself all the time. But, of course, the traumatic teenage years are against me! Not that anyone really thinks I'm a teenager. People who don't know me usually think I'm a college student. My hairstylist thought I was at least 19. What?! Sorry folks! You lose out on the guess my age game. Please DON'T try to guess my weight. That's just impolite. (And its all boob-weight anyway.)

Ah well, I've now whined about the unfairness of the world, my identity crisis, etc, etc. I think I really need to get a life! *Slaps self* Stop being self pitying! No pity parties here!!!

This was an odd summer. It also went by really quickly. Kind of a long day/short week thing. Generally uneventful, but with a few interesting bits.

It's been a chick flick/romance summer. I've watched Project Runway Season 1, Breakfast at Tiffany's, Pillow Talk, Wimbledon, Perfect Man, Must Love Dogs (Horrible movie), 10 Things I Hate About You, and others, I think...

I also read lots of romance novels. Mostly contemporary, but some regency. I don't like the medevial ones, or the ones with the screwed up pictures on them. Thats a good tip: If you actually want a plot, pick the novels without the stupid pictures on the front!
My Favorites:
Ain't She Sweet, The Damsel in That Dress, What Price Love?, Bachelor List... and others that I don't remember.

I also read a lot of chick-lit, like The Mommy Fund, Carpe Demon, Brilliant, Priceless, Flawless.

Of course, I read normal stuff too! Good Omens, Night Watch, The Eyre Affair, Hope Was Here, etc. etc.

So really, it was a lazy summer, where I actually got slightly tan (I'm losing it already!), and went to work and read. I didn't really see any of my friends, which wasn't that horrid, because they were mostly in India. I saw Jen though...

I'm rather pissed that Yechen is leaving. First Sae, then Yechen.

Oh. I already updated today. I had forgotten.

Welll, since the last update I changed my layout. Its cool(er) now.

I also made baklava. We had this tube of phyllo dough in the freezer and it was beginning to bother me so I searched for phyllo dough recipes. And then I made baklava.

It was rather strange because the recipe didn't call for honey.

Baklava is layers of phyllo dough with nut filling. Mine was walnuts with sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg (no cloves in the house). Then you bake it for a while and make a glaze, which is basically sugar and lemon juice. I was being stupid and forgot that the sugar would melt, so I added wayy too much lemon juice. So now it kinda tastes like lemons. I couldn't figure out how to cut it into diamonds either. I think I may fail Geometry honors next year.

I am also a little peeved because MSU does not offer Hindi or Korean (or Italian, for that matter), which are 3 out of the 5 languages I want to learn. Since it takes 2 years to reach proficiency, I can start a new language each year, while still learning the old one! That way I can learn 4 languages in 5 years.

My other idea was to take spanish once a week at LCC, and then my senior year I would dual enroll in MSU and start Italian for a semester. That way I could learn spanish during high school (along with Latin, which I am already taking) and then Italian, segueing into German, Korean, and Hindi, the other languages I want to learn. The only thing I am worried about is that the LCC course description says "Class mostly taught in spanish" for the very first spanish class they offer. Well, what does that mean??!?!?! I tried an immersion french class once, but I sucked at it and didn't continue. So that is my main worry.

I want to learn Italian so it is easier to sing in Italian, and so I can understand what is really going on in the song without relying on the English poetic translation. German and spanish would just be useful whilst traveling (If I ever have the chance). There is a huge number of Korean immigrants coming here, and it would be great to be able to not have communication problems. And since I have many Hindu friends, learning Hindi would make me very happy. Not to mention the fact that I wouldn't feel so white if I continue to get invited to the functions.

Moving out

Daryl mved out yesterday. Only about 15 minutes away, but still. She is going to college now, so I'll be an only child for the next 10 out of 12 months for the next 3 years. Yay.

I actually do miss her. It is fun to talk to her and stuff...
